Back in mid-December 2015, an early production model of what was rumored to be the Moto X 2016 was leaked. The metallic prototype was like nothing that recently came out from Motorola’s stable. The leaked prototype was radically different from current gen Motorola devices, changing just about everything that we were familiar with. But since this was an early production model, the leaked prototype was brushed aside since there was a very good chance that that device/design would never reach mass production.
So now, here we are in May 2016, and as it turns out, that prototype may very well be the next Motorola flagship device. This news comes in from multiple sources. Evan Blass of @evleaks fame mentioned that the earlier leak of the device is turning out to be the real deal.The next bit of information come in from HelloMotoHK’s Google+ page, going one step ahead and providing us with renders of the new devices, namely the Moto X 2016 and the next-gen Droid 2016.
Starting off with the next-gen Droid 2016, there is so much to talk about it. The front of the Droid 2016 features an oval fingerprint sensor on the bottom, placed offset on big bottom bezels. There are also some form of sensors, or likely neutral capacitive buttons on either side of the fingerprint sensor. To remind every one of the presence of Big Red, a Version logo also adorns the front, just above the fingerprint sensor. Above the display, you get a front camera, a raised earpiece and possibly a front LED flash. You also get a metallic side frame with rounded corners, with separated volume buttons and a power button above it.
The back brings in a lot of new information and also manages to raise as many questions. First thing to notice is the colorful back pattern which appears a bit glossy, which could indicate a glass back (albeit prior leak image points to a metallic unibody device). The back also houses a large, protruding camera module with the Moto branding inside. You get a flat tire look on the camera module, much like the Moto 360, with the rear flash contributing towards the visual cue. Below the camera, you get the Moto logo but no dimple this time around. On the bottom part of the back, you get drilled speaker holes and the Droid branding. The choice of back color and design and the branding color, along with the flat look and speaker design gives the phone a very different look.
Next up, is the Moto X 2016.
The Moto X 2016 is slightly different from the Droid 2016, and radically different from its predecessors. There is a metallic flat back, with plastic bits likely on the top and bottom. There are some unidentified sensors inside the camera module. The speaker holes on the bottom are replaced by what appears to be connection areas for a docking mechanism. On the front, you get a squircle fingerprint sensor much like the rumored Moto G4, along with visually neutral capacitive buttons on either side. Sensors seen on the Droid 2016 do not appear visibly on the front of the white color model, but are noticeable on the black color render. This is likely an error of inconsistency by the creator of the render.
The renders also provide a visual estimation of the camera hump protrusion, which looks significant.
The new Moto devices are shaping up to complete redesigns from their past. Gone are the curved phones with the dimple on the back. Now you get flat metallic devices that are thin but bear a camera hump. Mind you, these images and information on the Moto X 2016 and Droid 2016 are still leaks at best, so things can vary and change till the devices are officially unveiled.
Just as a recap, the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus have also been leaked in the buildup to their upcoming launch. The Moto G4 and G4 Plus will both likely sport a 5.5″ FHD display, a Snapdragon 430 SoC with Adreno 505 GPU, water resistance, micro sd expandability, a 3000 mAh battery, 13MP rear camera with Laser Autofocus, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. Points of differentiation between the Moto G4 and the G4 Plus will be the presence of a fingerprint sensor on the Plus, and RAM and storage configuration difference [2GB RAM/16GB internal memory for Moto G4; 3GB RAM/32GB internal memory for Moto G4 Plus].
Motorola has an event in India scheduled for May 17, which is likely to be the launch pad for the new Moto G and Moto G Plus. The Moto X 2016 and the Droid 2016 will likely be released in July-August 2016.
