People tend to want more out of the things they already have. A prime example of this is the mobile phone industry, where cellphones used to just be for calling and later texting people on the go but evolved to smartphone use with hundreds of different apps. Now we are at the point where the applications we use are so bloated that they run poorly on low-end hardware—the kind of devices that most people still use. This has sparked a trend where companies release “lite” versions of their applications. Twitter is no exception and this week they announced that Twitter Lite is available for India and 20 additional countries.
Twitter has known that having a lighter version of its service available is a priority for them when the company launched Twitter Lite last year. Not only was this satisfying to use on low-end devices, but it was also just an optimized mobile web application that didn’t need to be installed from an app store. It offers features such as data saver, bookmarks, push notifications, night modes, and now threads with the latest update. At an install size of 3MB, the app won’t take up much storage space.
So again, the company did what they knew they had to do and that was to develop a cleaner, lighter version of their Android application for those who just cannot (or choose not to) spend a lot of money on expensive smartphones. The company released their mobile application version of Twitter Lite less than a year ago and launched it in the Google Play Store for 24 different countries. The company has been happy with Twitter Lite and just this week they have announced they are making it available in 21 additional countries.
