Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 gets an Android Pie (Android 9) port

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 Android Pie

The official release of Android Pie is out for the Google Pixel series and the Essential Phone, and the Android 9 source code has been uploaded to AOSP. For some users on the more popular devices, this means a swift update to the latest release is now possible—at least unofficially. The popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 4Mi 3, Mi 4, and Redmi 4X recently received fairly stable Android 9 ports, and now it’s the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1’s turn.

Thanks to XDA Senior Member Shivam Kumar Jha, owners of Asus’ popular mid-range device can now taste the latest Android release before the official update rolls out. Of course, the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 did receive an unofficial port of the P Developer Preview, but now that the Android Pie source code is available, developers can build more stable releases of the latest Android version. The device launched with a near-stock build of Android 8.1 Oreo and Project Treble support and given Asus’ success with the device in India (the device’s high demand led them to drop their flash sale model and sell the device 24/7), we expect the official Android Pie update to be released in the near future.

For now, you can enjoy this unofficial, mostly stable release by an XDA community member. Most functions seem to be working as you would expect, however, current known issues at this time include NFC and SELinux being in permissive mode. There was an initial issue with in-call audio, but a fix has since been found here. Also, the release comes with the Camera2API enabled out-of-the-box so you can install a Google Camera port to drastically enhance image quality.
