HMD’s Nokia 6 is already getting the July Security Update

Just last week we informed our readers that the Nokia 6 is coming to the U.S. by this month. Since its release in Asian countries, HMD Global did an outstanding job at delivering system updates. The company is continuing its this trend, as the device is already receiving the July security patch. Unlike many other vendors, HMD is delivering security updates as soon as possible to all its smartphones.

The update is 150MB in size and is currently rolling out to Nokia 6 owners in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It should be available through an OTA update for the TA-1003 model. By the time many of these users have started to receive the update, Google had not even published this month’s July security bulletin, though that has since changed.

Still, it’s impressive to see a device receive the latest patch even hours before Google officially published the bulletin. This is not the first time this has happened with a device, but in light of the fact that many devices wait weeks or even months to receive a patch, HMD Global’s speed in this regard is noteworthy.

The Nokia 6 was launched with Android 7.0 and subsequently received an update to Android 7.1.1 post-launch. HMD confirmed that its devices would receive Android updates for at least two years. This means that the Nokia 6, 5 and 3 should eventually receive the Android O update some time after it becomes available.

The Nokia 6 is a mid-range smartphone released early this year. The phone features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC with 3 GBs of RAM, 32 GBs of internal storage expandable via a microSD card slot, a 16 MP rear-facing camera, and a 8 MP front-facing camera. The device has a 5.5-inch Full HD display and is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery. The phone will be sold for $229 and should soon be available on Amazon, though it should be noted that it will only be fully compatible with T-Mobile’s network.
