Galaxy S8’s Bixby Voice Assistant Reportedly Won’t be Available Out of The Box

With the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus approaching the consumer launch, Samsung has revealed somewhat-unpleasant news for potential buyers (well, depending on how you look at it). One of the main focus during Samsung’s Unpacked event for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus last month was its own virtual assistant called Bixby. Similar to already-available AI assistants such as Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa, Bixby can perform a variety of tasks. That includes setting up reminders, providing weather and news updates, show you relevant information from your devices and much more.

At the time of unveiling the Galaxy S8, Samsung promised that the full version of Bixby will be ready for prime time use when the device will go on sale. But now it appears users won’t get the full experience of Bixby out of the box as the service is still under development.

In an official statement sent to Axios, Samsung has confirmed that its in-house virtual assistant, Bixby Voice, won’t be available when the device goes on sale later this month. Samsung notes that key functionalities of Bixby such as Vision, Home, and Reminder will be available in all markets out of the box, with Bixby Voice coming first in the US “later this spring.”

Key features of Bixby, including Vision, Home and Reminder, will be available with the global launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 on April 21. Bixby Voice will be available in the U.S. on the Galaxy S8 later this spring.

This also poses a question over Samsung’s decision to implement a dedicated hardware button for a service which wasn’t fully ready for commercial launch. Luckily, this dedicated button can easily be remapped to Google Assistant if you don’t care for Samsung’s virtual assistant. Mishaal has an in-depth guide which will walk you through step by step to remap the hardware button to Google Assistant.
