Samsung Mobile President: Galaxy Note 7 to Receive Android 7.0 in “2 to 3 months”

When Samsung decided to prepone the launch of the Galaxy Note 7, they also had to keep in mind that a new Android version would still not have been released. This meant that there would be little differentiating factor between the Note 7 and the S7 Edge, if you also consider the specifications and other factors.

Samsung Mobile President Koh Dong-jin, in a session with KoreaTimes has mentioned that the Galaxy Note 7 will receive Android 7.0 Nougat in “two to three months”.

Samsung Electronics also said it will offer operating system (OS) updates for the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, in two to three months, after gathering feedback from users.

“It is very important for us to offer up-to-date information with the new OS, but what’s more crucial is to build a stable and seamless platform for users,” Koh said. “That’s why we are planning to do enough beta testing before any OS updates.”

So while one other OEM is dropping down pre-release firmware for adventurous users, Samsung plans to do enough beta testing and feedback cycles before any OS updates. The estimated timeline given does not mention any specifics, but we assume that 2 to 3 months is given from the public release of Android 7.0 Nougat as that is a much more conservative timeline. If you purchased a carrier variant of the Note 7, you can add in anywhere from additional weeks to additional months to this figure.

Samsung Mobile President also “confirmed” the existence of the 128GB variant of the Note 7. To recall, this 128GB variant with 6GB RAM passed through TENAA recently, so it was confirmed to be headed to the Chinese market in the near future.

“We are considering launching Note 7 with a 128 GB internal storage capacity for the Chinese market, even though the handset made its global debut with a 64 GB memory,” Koh Dong-jin said.

This is because Chinese handset makers are pushing for aggressive marketing strategies by releasing handsets with high storage capacity, according to Samsung’s mobile chief.

“We will continue to accept different needs from each marketplace, and respond by releasing localized products by changing memory capacity or color,” he said.

This does not rule out the eventuality of the Note 7 coming in a 6GB variant in the international market, so consumers who purchase the best in terms of specs would be disappointed to know that an even beefier-specced Note 7 exists. If the device does come out around the globe, it will be interesting to see how Samsung prices the product seeing its upgrade on two spec fronts. Will Samsung lower the price of the other models, or will this be priced even higher than the current pricing? We will have to wait and watch on this.
