Google Introduces Spaces: An App for Small Group Sharing

Just ahead of Google I/O 2016, Google has introduced a new app.”Spaces” is essentially a group messaging app with a few tools and tricks built in, which lets you stay within the app and still follow along relevant conversation.

Spaces is a combination of group messaging and social media, building around conversation and topics like how we interact on social media. If that does not entice you, Spaces also packs in Google Search, Chrome and YouTube inside of it, meaning that you will have lesser and lesser need to leave the app when actually in a conversation. Since it is a group messaging app, you can add friends to conversations around specific topics which could revolve around anything from photos, videos and links, to a social event or a topic.

The idea behind Spaces was to make group sharing easy and avoid a lot of app switching when your whole squad is online and talking at the same. The conversational view lets you follow along topics without missing anything. And frankly, that is about it. It does a lot of what Hangouts, Google+, Chrome and YouTube do in one single app.

Perhaps the most interesting part of Spaces is not what the product can do, but what Google plans to do with it during Google I/O 2016. Each session at I/O will have its own Space, making it easier for developers to connect with each other and talk about the topics with other like-minded individuals before and after the event. Google mentions that there are a few surprises too, insisting enthusiasts attending Google I/O should install Spaces before they arrive!

Google Spaces is rolling out today on Android, iOS, desktop and mobile web for all Gmail accounts.

What do you think about Google Spaces? Have you tried it out? What do you think Google has planned with Spaces for I/O 2016? Will Spaces take off, or is it destined to become the next Waze? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
