Back in 1962, Marshall created their very first amp. Since then, Marshall amps have been well known in the music world and front stage at plenty of concerts. Certainly Marshall isn’t the first name that comes to mind in the smartphone arena. However, just today Marshall announced their “Marshall London” smartphone.
The device itself carries over much of Marshall’s design language from their speakers and amps. The back cover is a dead ringer for a typical Marshall amp, and the typical Marshall branding takes up residence front and center of the device. Also up front are pair of speakers they claim are “The loudest on planet Earth?”
In case you don’t want to blast your tunes for everyone to hear, up top we have two headphone jacks with independent volume control. This is a unique feature for an Android handset – one that makes a lot of sense for a music focused device. In between the two jacks is an “M” button. It may look like a power button, but in fact it’s a customize-able shortcut button (for your favorite music program.)
Instead of a volume rocker, Marshall has placed an analogue scroll wheel along the right side. The wheel is a nice touch that’s reminiscent of amps and other musical equipment.
Rounding out the total music experience is the spec (these) potential buyers care about: a Wolfson WM8281 DAC. For years now in the smartphone space Woflson DACs have been among the best performers and highly sought after.
Unfortunately, the rest of the specs are decidedly middle to low end:
- 4.7″ display with 1280 x 720 resolution
- Quad Core snapdragon 410
- 8MP rear camera
- 2MP front camera
- 2 GB RAM
- 16 GB Storage with MicroSD support
- Removable 2500 mAh battery
- Dual Microphones with noise-cancellation
With the battery size and lower resolution display we should see solid battery life out of the London, but this isn’t a powerhouse by any means. The London also ships with Android 5.0.2 (a version behind current) with some software additions for music lovers like LoopStack and DJApp.
Aside from the specs, the other tough pill to swallow is the price. The London is out first in Scandinavia and will sell for SEK4,995 ($583) in Sweden. The price is flirting with the likes of the Galaxy S6 and LG G4 and may make for a tough sell. However, if music is your main focus, the London may wind up being a great purpose built device.
