Report: Google Wants to Invest Over $880 Million in LG for OLED Panels

It’s pretty clear that Samsung dominates the current OLED panel production for the entire globe, but a new report says Google wants to help prop up another company. Google has been sourcing their OLED panels from Samsung since the release of the Nexus 6P, but this could be changing with the release of the upcoming Pixel 2 smartphone. A new report from a local media outlet cites “unnamed sources” and says Google wants to invest in LG’s Display division for their next phone.

The report was picked up by Reuters and puts those investment numbers right at 1 trillion won (which would be about $880.29 million). LG has used their own POLED panels in smartphones the company has released in the past, but they have never really caught on outside of the company. LG has continuedinvest in this technology to throughout the years and we generally only see them used in the company’s own TVs these days.

It’s unclear exactly why Google is wanting to opt for OLED panels from LG right now though. It has recently been reported that Apple is ordering tens of millions of OLED panels from Samsung for an upcoming iPhone though, so we could be looking at a supply issue here. Either way, this is a big opportunity for LG Display, and even LG as a whole since it would ultimately bring in some outside revenue that they could really use right about now.

LG has declined to comment on the story and Reuters says that Google wasn’t available for a comment at the time this story was published. Since the information comes from unnamed sources, this might not materialize at all. Then again, it certainly makes sense, and we could see the upcoming Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL using LG’s OLED panel technology.

Would you like to see LG’s OLED panels in the next Pixel phones, or would you rather see Google switch back to LCD later this year?
